2020 and 2021 have and still continue to be a whirlwind of unpredictability and insanity. While we aren’t seeing the poles reversing or Yellowstone erupting and effectively ending the world, we have most assuredly been subjected to some sort of event that has caused the very way in which we conduct our daily lives to be altered for years to come. The events of the last year or so have made me think a lot about preppers and being prepared. I never considered myself to be a prepper but within the last year I’ve purchased cases of water, shelf-stable emergency food, and stocked up on all sorts of things I never would have imagined I’d find myself buying. This week for TFB’s Weekly Amazon Deals 4, we’re going to take a look at the type of stuff you can and should probably be stocking up on or at least have in inventory should we be grazed by the apocalypse once more.

Water is by far the most precious resource in most survival situations. If you take a look at what happened back during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, despite the relative abundance of water around, there was simply not enough clean water for everyone to get access to. Modern tools like the Sawyer Mini Water Filtration System are not only affordable but adaptable to all types of situations. You can either use the supplied water container or the Sawyer filter can be threaded onto most types of water bottles making for a handy solution for acquiring water during a disaster or emergency situation.
If things start to get really bad and your primary residence becomes compromised, it may be necessary to travel to a safer destination or in a worst-case scenario – camping out in the wild for a few days. This normally $150 bug-out bag from Rescue Guard is currently on sale for $109.95 and contains not only purified drinking water packets but freeze-dried emergency food as well.
Gerber Ultimate Knife
Knives are useful for all sorts of non-violent tasks (as well as many violent tasks). Whether that is trying to start a fire, cut through fallen debris or field dressing a hunted animal, knives are an absolutely essential survival tool. The Gerber Ultimate knife comes with a 4.8″ partially serrated blade, a rubber grip, sturdy hammer pommel and is rounded out with a firestriker and striking edge. The knife sheath also features an integrated sharpening stone on the back for keeping your blade in top condition.
Keeping track of what is going on in your local community after a disaster has occurred can keep you abreast of any factors that might affect you and your family’s own situation. By far, one of the best emergency radios/chargers on the market is the Midland ER210 which serves not only as an emergency radio and flashlight but also can charge your phone and scan for official NOAA weather conditions. Currently, the Midland ER210 Emergency Radio is available for $49.99.
Paracord has been the longstanding survival cordage for everyone from military personnel to your hardcore trail hikers. Having cordage around is just plain useful whether it’s tying something down, someone up or simply fastening something together. You’ll never know when you’re gonna need it and that’s why I generally like to keep a spool or two around for whatever I might run into. This particular paracord claims a tensile strength of 550 pounds and features 7 smaller internal strands that can be used as emergency fishing lines or used when the thicker cord is not appropriate. The cord is currently on sale for $10.07 per 100-foot roll.
I’m a big fan of much smaller and less powerful flashlights for my EDC lineup but the Maglite line of flashlights has been a staple of the survival and duty scenes for so long it deserves a mention. Right now Maglite has their grey 3-Cell D battery-powered flashlight on sale for $38.95 (normally $65.00). The 3-Cell models offer a nice illuminating device that is also water-resistant and drop resistant. If push comes to shove you could also use it as a bludgeon to defend yourself.
